MedLookup brings medical search to MCP
MedLookup is an open-source medical terminology MCP server that lets any MCP-compatible client look up abbreviations, conditions, ICD-10 codes, drug data, and clinical definitions. It ships as a Dockerized FastMCP server, works without a paid API key for most features, and adds optional UMLS support for deeper concept lookups.
This is the kind of niche MCP project that makes the protocol actually useful: not another generic wrapper, but a domain-specific tool with real retrieval value for clinical workflows. The upside is strong source coverage and easy local setup; the catch is that anything touching medical notes still needs strict human review and compliance discipline.
- –It aggregates public medical sources including NLM Clinical Tables, MedlinePlus, RxNorm, OpenFDA, and optional UMLS instead of depending on one proprietary backend
- –Docker setup and Streamable HTTP transport make it straightforward to plug into Claude Desktop, Claude Code, or other MCP clients
- –The local add/remove keyword flow is a smart touch for handling clinic-specific abbreviations and custom terminology over time
- –Its sweet spot is medical note transcription cleanup and terminology expansion, not autonomous clinical decision-making
- –The repo looks very early-stage, with minimal traction so far, but it fits the broader shift toward specialized MCP servers for vertical workflows
