Amazon Alexa Tablets Bring Alexa+ to Android
Amazon’s new 8.7-inch, 11-inch, and 12-inch tablets run Android with full Google Play access, Alexa+ on-screen assistance, live conversations, and a distraction-free Kindle mode. Prices start at $229.99, with shipments beginning October 14. [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/devices/new-amazon-alexa-tablets-alexa-plus)
This is less a tablet refresh than Amazon’s attempt to fix Fire OS’s biggest weakness: limited app and developer reach. Google Play makes the hardware more credible, but the larger bet is whether Alexa+ can become a genuinely useful context layer without turning every screen into an Amazon storefront.
- –Developers now distribute through Google Play, including testing, telemetry, payments, and app submissions; Amazon Appstore testing and APS monetization do not apply. [Amazon Developer](https://www.developer.amazon.com/docs/device-specs/alexa-tablet-devices-faq.html)
- –Opt-in On-Screen Intelligence lets Alexa interpret visible content and take actions such as organizing calendar events, while live sessions enable continuous voice conversations.
- –The Kindle mode is a thoughtful differentiator, silencing notifications, reducing blue light, and extending reading battery life to up to 20 hours.
- –Full Play access broadens the addressable audience, but Amazon still controls the home experience through personalized feeds, recommendations, and commerce integrations. [WIRED](https://www.wired.com/story/amazon-alexa-tablets-2026/)
- –The $499.99 12 Pro and paid keyboard and pen push Amazon into premium Android tablet territory, where app access alone will not beat Apple or Samsung.
