Google Makes K-12 AI Opt-In
Google is bringing its Guided Learning tutoring experience to Search through a pilot and making it globally available in Google Classroom. Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom, and Google Search will be off by default for K-12 student accounts until administrators enable them.
Google’s tutoring-first approach is promising, but bundling AI controls with access to Search gives schools meaningful choice while also creating platform leverage.
- –Guided Learning uses step-by-step questioning instead of immediately revealing homework answers.
- –Classroom anchors tutoring to assignments and gives teachers visibility into where students need help.
- –Search will pilot Guided Learning in select U.S. schools later this month.
- –Default-off access addresses safety and consent concerns after criticism of AI being enabled for students.
- –Developers building education AI should prioritize age-based permissions, teacher oversight, and measurable learning outcomes.
