ts-rust launches Rust TypeScript compiler
Theo Browne’s experimental, MIT-licensed Rust port of Microsoft’s TypeScript 7 compiler includes compatible CLI, type-checking, language-server, and API surfaces. Distributed as the `tsc-rs` npm package, it targets faster checks and drop-in adoption.
ts-rust is a striking demonstration of AI-assisted systems programming, but its benchmark win does not yet make it a production replacement for Microsoft’s compiler.
- –Claims 181,711 passing Go baseline tests and roughly 1.61× faster type-checking than TypeScript 7 across six open-source projects.
- –Bun’s checker remains faster overall, making this more compelling as a compatibility experiment than a clear performance victory.
- –The drop-in `tsc` interface, LSP, API, and built-in Effect diagnostics give developers a credible migration path.
- –Known issues include monorepo output differences, `tsc -b --watch` failures, editor memory growth, and limited platform support.
- –The headline $420,000 cost covers earlier model attempts; the successful Claude-based port reportedly used about $24,000 over two weeks.
