Burrow Brings Free One-Click VMs to Macs
Burrow is a free, MIT-licensed SwiftUI app that creates Linux, Windows 11 ARM, and macOS virtual machines on Apple silicon Macs with one-click setup. It downloads verified OS images, supports snapshots and cloning, and includes a CLI for headless workflows.
Burrow makes a credible open-source alternative to Parallels and UTM, especially for developers who value local control and zero licensing costs.
- –Uses Apple’s Virtualization.framework for Linux and macOS guests, with QEMU acceleration for Windows 11 ARM
- –Eliminates much of the usual VM friction by downloading installers, configuring machines, and handling setup automatically
- –`burrowctl` makes the project useful beyond desktop experimentation, including scripted and headless development environments
- –The current limitations are significant: Apple silicon and ARM64 guests only, no Windows 3D acceleration or vTPM, and no USB passthrough
- –Its best near-term audience is developers and tinkerers, not users seeking polished Windows gaming or deep macOS integration
