DeFM Drops Open Depth Model for Robots
DeFM is an open-source depth foundation model trained on 60.4 million images with DINO-style self-distillation. It offers 12 models from 3M to 304M parameters for navigation, manipulation, locomotion, and other robotics tasks without color input.
DeFM makes a strong case that robots need depth-native foundation models, not RGB encoders awkwardly adapted to geometry. Its deployable model range is especially promising, though its state-of-the-art claims still need broader independent reproduction.
- –Metric-aware normalization preserves distance information across scales from millimeters to 100 meters.
- –Distilled CNNs make the model practical for edge robots and resource-constrained hardware.
- –Public code and trained weights under an Apache-2.0 license lower the barrier to robotics experimentation.
- –Cross-sensor and sim-to-real generalization could reduce task-specific perception engineering.
- –The project remains under review, so benchmark results should be treated as promising rather than settled.
