GitHub introduces Canvas, a new interactive, bidirectional work surface for the GitHub Copilot App that allows developers to generate and edit user interfaces on the fly.
GitHub has showcased Canvas, a new feature within the standalone GitHub Copilot desktop app that moves beyond traditional chat interfaces to offer a bidirectional, interactive workspace. Canvas serves as a live surface for human-agent collaboration, allowing developers to monitor and steer agent activities in real-time, generate and edit application interfaces dynamically, and manage tasks like project planning and terminal sessions. Currently in technical preview for Copilot Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans, the feature is designed to bridge the gap between AI intent and verifiable developer work.
Canvas marks the transition from linear chat interfaces to rich Agent Experience (AX) surfaces that are essential for orchestrating multi-agent workflows.
* Bidirectional Workspace: Developers can edit, reorder, and approve work on the same surface that AI agents are updating in real-time.
* Interface Generation: Users can generate full application interfaces and interactive boards on the fly based on simple prompts.
* Outer-Loop Integration: As part of the standalone GitHub Copilot App, Canvas signals GitHub's intent to capture the broader developer workflow outside the traditional IDE.
