mlx-tinker brings local RL to MacBooks
mlx-tinker is a proof-of-concept Tinker-compatible backend for MLX that runs Qwen3.5 locally on Apple Silicon and keeps learning from agent interactions. It supports OpenClaw today, has an early Hermes Agent path, and leans on LoRA, KV caching, and checkpointing to make continual RL barely usable on a laptop.
// ANALYSIS
The big idea is strong: this turns a local Mac into an always-learning agent backend instead of a static inference box. The tradeoff is obvious from the post itself - the stack is real, but it is still a sharp-edged PoC with laptop-melting failure modes.
- –Managed OpenClaw looks like the most practical path, which matters because onboarding usually kills local agent tooling before it starts
- –Disk-backed transcript prefix caching plus quantized KV cache are the kind of unglamorous optimizations that make long agent loops feasible on Apple Silicon
- –The RL story is more interesting than plain inference: on-policy self-distillation / PPO-style updates give the product a real learning loop, not just a chat endpoint
- –Test coverage for Tinker, PyTorch, PEFT, and parity checks is a good signal that the author is treating numerical correctness seriously
- –Hermes support sounds promising but unfinished, so the repo reads more like a systems demo and research scaffold than a production platform
