Arcium Blackthorn launches private encrypted AI inference
Arcium has opened Blackthorn in private alpha, offering encrypted AI inference through an API, dedicated hardware, or customer-owned NVIDIA GPUs. It replaces the CPU TEE in the trust chain with MPC while keeping prompts, model weights, and outputs encrypted.
Blackthorn’s strongest pitch is its trust model, but its production case remains unproven until independent benchmarks and pricing emerge.
- –MPC removes the CPU enclave as a single hardware trust point, though NVIDIA’s confidential GPU environment remains trusted.
- –OpenAI-compatible APIs and bLLM could make confidential inference practical for healthcare, finance, government, and other regulated workloads.
- –Arcium claims near-native performance, but no public Blackthorn benchmarks are available yet.
- –Private-alpha access, undisclosed pricing, and dependence on Hopper or Blackwell GPUs limit immediate developer adoption.
- –The product’s success will depend on whether cryptographic privacy can match TEE-based services on latency, cost, and operational simplicity.
