Google Urged to Open-Source Imagen

This is less a product launch than a credibility play, and the argument is pretty strong: the original Imagen is old enough that keeping it closed no longer looks strategically necessary. Google’s own paper, though, already signals the main blocker by citing misuse and safety concerns as reasons not to release code or a public demo.

• –The competitive downside is limited because Imagen 3 and Imagen 4 are the current products, not the 2022 model.
• –Open weights would help replication, benchmarking, and fine-tuning research that currently depends on imperfect approximations.
• –Google has historically been more conservative than Meta or xAI on weight releases, so this is as much about optics as engineering.
• –If Google wanted an easy win with researchers, old Imagen is a plausible candidate, but the safety and licensing questions are still the real friction.
