Claude Code drops experimental Agent Teams feature
Anthropic's Claude Code CLI now includes a multi-agent orchestration layer, enabling developers to coordinate specialized agent teams that share state and communicate directly to solve complex, parallel tasks.
Claude's move into multi-agent orchestration signals a shift from single-purpose assistants to autonomous developer squads. The system uses a Team Lead for task delegation and Teammates for execution, significantly reducing manual context-switching for developers. Direct inter-agent communication and a shared Mailbox allow agents to challenge each other's hypotheses, potentially reducing AI hallucination. Quality gates and hooks like TeammateIdle provide necessary guardrails for autonomous workflows, while the experimental nature and high token cost suggest this is currently aimed at high-leverage refactors. Integration with terminal multiplexers like tmux and iTerm2 provides a real-time war room view of parallel agent progress.
