Cloudflare unveils Meerkat leaderless consensus
Cloudflare Research is building Meerkat, an experimental leaderless consensus service designed to manage control-plane state across its global network of 330+ data centers. Utilizing the QuePaxa algorithm, Meerkat enables concurrent proposals without destructive interference, maintaining high throughput and linearizability under adverse network conditions.
Leaderless consensus is the holy grail for global edge networks where latency fluctuations make timeout-based algorithms like Raft a liability.
* By moving away from authoritative leaders, Cloudflare eliminates a major single point of failure and bottleneck, resulting in significantly more resilient control planes.
* Using QuePaxa allows concurrent proposals to constructively interfere rather than collide, which could achieve up to 10x throughput improvement over Raft in highly unstable networks.
* However, the fundamental constraints of wide-area network latency still apply, meaning Meerkat's use case will remain restricted to low-frequency, highly consistent control-plane data rather than general-purpose databases.
