Debian Vote Allows Responsible AI Use

Debian’s compromise acknowledges AI-assisted development without creating a quality shortcut. The real test is whether maintainers can catch weak or legally ambiguous output without turning review into an impossible provenance audit.

• –Contributors must understand, review, test, and modify AI-assisted output before submitting it.
• –Disclosure is voluntary, making this substantially softer than proposals requiring AI labeling or banning generated contributions.
• –Contributors must not expose private communications, credentials, embargoed vulnerabilities, or other sensitive Debian data to untrusted AI services.
• –Bulk or autonomous changes still require prior discussion and human oversight.
