Ladybird Adds JIT, WebAssembly, New UI
Ladybird’s October update brings off-thread style and layout, a JavaScript JIT, a new WebAssembly engine, and a redesigned browser interface. The independent browser now passes Safari Technology Preview on Web Platform Tests while preparing its first alpha release.
Ladybird is shifting from an ambitious browser-engine experiment toward a genuinely credible runtime, although compatibility and polish still matter more than benchmark wins.
- –JavaScript and WebAssembly performance improved substantially through new JITs, including a roughly 7x gain on shared Wasm workloads.
- –Off-thread rendering keeps CSS animations and hover interactions responsive during long-running JavaScript.
- –Passing Safari Technology Preview on WPT is a meaningful compatibility milestone, with 2.18 million subtests completed.
- –AI coding agents helped close thousands of standards gaps, showing how agent-assisted maintenance can compound across a large test suite.
- –Release packages, crash reporting, accessibility support, and a redesigned UI indicate the project is becoming alpha-ready.
