MCP adds extension for agent skills discovery
A new extension for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) standardizes how AI agents discover and load Agent Skills directly from MCP servers. By establishing a protocol-level workflow—connecting to an MCP server, discovering available skills, retrieving skill metadata, and loading the corresponding SKILL.md definition—the extension allows agents to dynamically acquire domain-specific procedural instructions on demand without requiring manual local skill installation.
Transforming MCP servers into dynamic skill registries is a major leap forward for modular, autonomous agent architectures. Agents can dynamically query, inspect, and retrieve structured SKILL.md packages from remote or local MCP servers over standard protocol interfaces. This unifies tools and instructions by extending MCP beyond raw function definitions and tool schemas to deliver rich, contextual guidelines and multi-step workflows. It empowers agents to query connected environments at runtime to fetch specialized expertise independently, bridging the emerging Agent Skills ecosystem across multiple frameworks and MCP-compatible clients.
