Anthropic Red Team Flags IoT Worm Risk
Anthropic’s Frontier Red Team reports that models under 30B parameters can already complete many self-replication steps, while GLM-5.2 and stronger models succeeded in simplified end-to-end tests. The team says small models could replicate across cheap IoT hardware within months, though no such AI worm is currently known in the wild.
This is less a runaway-AI demonstration than a warning that neglected edge hardware could become a distributed compute substrate for autonomous malware.
- –A 9B model ran inference on 8 of 9 tested hardware types.
- –Anthropic demonstrated sharded inference across 15 off-brand Android TV boxes.
- –Replication would initially be slow—often taking days—so the near-term risk is persistence, not instant mass compromise.
- –Model weights could become part of a malware payload, while agentic behavior helps adapt to unfamiliar devices.
- –Developers should treat local model runtimes, IoT update paths, credentials, and device-to-device networking as security boundaries.
