Mullvad ends public DNS, backs Quad9

This is a sensible infrastructure consolidation, but Quad9 is not a feature-for-feature replacement for Mullvad DNS.

• –Mullvad VPN subscribers see little impact because VPN traffic already uses Mullvad’s internal DNS
• –Quad9 provides encrypted DNS plus malware and phishing protection through a specialized nonprofit operation
• –Mullvad’s ad- and tracker-blocking DNS variants will not carry over to Quad9
• –Developers and administrators should audit hard-coded DoH/DoT profiles, router settings, Pi-hole deployments, and device-management configurations
• –The sponsorship model lets Mullvad support stronger resolver infrastructure without duplicating Quad9’s operational and threat-intelligence work
