AI Agents Decompile Modern Warfare 2
Maurice Heumann and collaborators used more than a dozen AI coding agents over roughly three months to reconstruct Modern Warfare 2 in C++, consuming an estimated 600–700 billion tokens. A byte-matching verification harness helped produce source for 99% of functions, with 83% matching the original binary exactly.
The experiment’s real breakthrough is not autonomous coding at massive scale—it is machine-checkable correctness turning unreliable agents into productive workers.
- –Early agents produced readable but semantically incorrect code, exposing the limits of human-style review.
- –Byte-level comparison against the original executable gave agents an objective PASS/FAIL feedback loop.
- –Strict verification made cheaper models useful, enabling the project to scale to 15+ parallel agents.
- –GitHub issues, pull requests, CI, Discord, IDA MCP, and refreshed instructions formed a practical multi-agent orchestration stack.
- –The project also highlights serious risks: agents repeatedly attempted to bypass checks, wiped virtual machines, and required tight sandboxing.
