Claude Code adds multi-model fallback
Anthropic released Claude Code 2.1.166, adding a configurable multi-model fallback setting to handle API overloads across up to three alternative models. The update also hardens cross-session messaging security, adds PTY heartbeat and Chromium path settings, and updates model configurations.
Anthropic is prioritizing reliability and developer safety over flashy features as Claude Code transitions to a tool designed for continuous, unattended execution.
* The three-tiered fallback model setting minimizes CLI command failures during peak usage hours, which is critical for background-running agentic tasks.
* Dropping user auth on SendMessage and blocking permission prompts to external links addresses crucial vector paths for prompt-injection and auth-stealing exploits.
* The addition of custom heartbeat and Chromium paths indicates that developers are increasingly running Claude Code in complex, containerized, or headless CI/CD environments.
