Google rolls out Android developer verification

This is a legitimate anti-malware move, but it also turns Android distribution into a centralized trust registry. Google is keeping sideloading technically alive, yet it is clearly making anonymous and small-scale distribution much harder.

• –Google says it found over 90 times more malware from sideloaded sources than on Google Play, which makes the security case easy to understand.
• –Play developers get the smoothest path: existing verification mostly carries over, and Google says eligible Play apps will be auto-registered.
• –Outside Play, developers have to use the new Android Developer Console, verify identity, and register package names; the hobbyist/student account only covers up to 20 devices.
• –The advanced flow and ADB carve-outs preserve power-user freedom, but the friction is high enough that casual sideloading will likely drop sharply.
• –Open-source and privacy-focused communities are already pushing back because this shifts Android toward a permissioned distribution model.
