MatAnyone2 brings open-source video matting to CVPR
MatAnyone2 is an open-source video matting framework accepted at CVPR 2026 that uses a learned quality evaluator to score and self-correct its own alpha-matte output before delivery. It works on arbitrary footage with no green screen, taking a video and a first-frame segmentation mask (from SAM2) as input, and is available now on HuggingFace Spaces.
// ANALYSIS
A self-critiquing matting model that fixes its own mistakes before you see them is a genuinely novel architecture choice — and it shows in the output quality, which rivals commercial tools like Adobe's background removal and CapCut's AI isolation.
- –The learned quality evaluator is the core innovation: it inspects every pixel in the generated matte, flags problem regions, and triggers re-matting on those areas automatically
- –Hair-in-motion edge detection — historically the hardest matting problem — is handled without green screen or depth sensors
- –Integration with SAM2 for first-frame masking means users can initialize on any subject in any scene with a few clicks
- –Full weights and training code are not yet released (inference-only for now), but a HuggingFace Spaces demo is live
- –Open-source under NTU S-Lab License 1.0 — not MIT/Apache, so check license terms before commercial use
