Perplexity launches SPACE sandbox platform
Perplexity has transitioned all production traffic for its Perplexity Computer agent to its own custom-built sandbox lifecycle management platform called SPACE. Originally launched using a third-party sandbox provider in February, the service now runs entirely on SPACE, achieving 5x faster tail latency and improved control over sandbox environments.
Relying on third-party sandboxing platforms is no longer viable for high-performance AI agent startups as they scale, forcing players to build custom orchestration layers for better tail latency and cost efficiency.
* Custom sandbox orchestration is crucial for real-time computer-use agents where every millisecond of container start/stop/command execution time matters.
* Transitioning away from external providers provides Perplexity with tighter security boundaries and direct control over the virtualization stack.
* The 5x tail latency improvement highlights the inefficiency of off-the-shelf sandbox APIs when serving production-scale agent workloads.
