HybridAgent Brings Latent Thinking to Agents
HybridAgent lets LLM agents reason in latent space, then switch back to text for tool calls and final answers. Its paper reports 10.4% higher performance, 35.5–54.7% fewer tokens, and up to 3.7× lower costs across 11 benchmarks. [Paper](https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.18861)
The RNN analogy is directionally right: persistent hidden state can avoid narrating every intermediate step, but HybridAgent is an LLM training and inference stack—not a classic RNN revival.
- –HybridLink connects latent reasoning with text-based interaction and tool use
- –HybridSFT and HybridRL train agents to choose when to think silently versus act externally
- –Readable pseudo-text renders latent spans for inspection, though readability does not guarantee faithful interpretability
- –Open-source code, Qwen3-based checkpoints, and training data make the approach testable by developers
- –The biggest question is whether claimed efficiency gains hold across models, tools, and longer real-world tasks
