Perplexity Open-Sources SPACE for Agents
Perplexity open-sourced SPACE, its Apache 2.0 sandbox platform for running agent and user code inside isolated Firecracker microVMs. The infrastructure powers tasks in Perplexity Computer and exposes sandbox creation, command execution, lifecycle management, and streaming through an HTTP API.
SPACE targets the hardest infrastructure problem in agentic software: executing untrusted code with useful speed and reliable isolation.
- –Firecracker microVMs provide a stronger boundary than ordinary process or container sandboxes for coding and browsing agents.
- –Templates, writable filesystems, snapshots, pause/resume, and command sessions make the runtime composable for long-lived agent workflows.
- –Apache 2.0 licensing and production provenance give teams a credible self-hosting option.
- –Local deployment remains operations-heavy, requiring Linux x86_64, KVM, btrfs, Docker, and privileged host access.
- –Perplexity reports median sandbox creation latency falling from 185 ms to 60 ms, but independent security audits remain essential before running highly sensitive workloads.
