Taurscribe drops local dictation with #1 ASR
Taurscribe is an open-source, privacy-first desktop dictation app built with Rust and Tauri. It enables high-accuracy speech-to-text by running the top-ranked Cohere Transcribe model entirely on-device with global hotkey support.
Taurscribe's integration of the latest Cohere Transcribe model marks a significant shift in local ASR performance, finally challenging Whisper's dominance. It leverages Cohere Transcribe, which currently holds the top spot on the Hugging Face Open ASR Leaderboard with a 5.42% Word Error Rate. The application features a triple-engine architecture allowing users to toggle between Cohere, Parakeet for low-latency, and Whisper for high compatibility. It also employs a local 0.5B Qwen 2.5 model for real-time post-processing to handle punctuation, grammar, and formatting. With hardware acceleration via CUDA, Metal, and DirectML, Taurscribe supports Windows, macOS, and Linux under the Apache 2.0 license, making it a viable foundation for private, developer-centric dictation workflows.
