GLaDOS 1.4.3 unlocks GPU software
GLaDOS 1.4.3 adds Linux-compatible virtio-gpu support, letting an unmodified Mesa stack run Vulkan and OpenGL through Zink on a host GPU. The release delivers 27–38 FPS on a 3D workload previously limited to roughly 1 FPS on the CPU.
This is the moment GLaDOS shifts from eccentric kernel experiment to credible systems research: third-party software can now reach real graphics hardware without teaching the kernel Vulkan.
- –Mesa runs as an ordinary ring-3 Linux program through `/dev/dri/renderD128`; the kernel exposes the device without implementing Vulkan itself.
- –Zink brings OpenGL 4.6 compatibility, while a 3D game sees a measured 20–30× improvement.
- –The release also expands the Linux ABI with 32-bit binaries, multicore threading, background jobs, ALSA sound, Wayland input, and desktop launchers.
- –The result is still experimental: GPU runs can freeze on the first frame, and benchmarks were measured while standing still.
- –Today’s GPU path uses QEMU/KVM on a Linux host; a native bare-metal GPU driver remains the next major milestone. [Project documentation](https://glados.aperture.institute/)
