Claude gains autonomous computer use capability
Anthropic has launched a public beta of "computer use" for Claude 3.5 Sonnet, enabling the AI to interact with desktops by simulating keystrokes, mouse clicks, and screen navigation. The API-driven feature allows developers to automate complex multi-step workflows across any application.
Claude’s "computer use" marks a significant architectural shift from chat-based AI to autonomous agents capable of direct environmental interaction. As the first frontier model to natively support GUI navigation via screenshots and virtual inputs, it outperforms competitors on the OSWorld benchmark while shifting the agent paradigm from fragile browser extensions to a unified, model-level capability. Although the public beta remains experimental and error-prone, its immediate availability on Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud Vertex AI provides a robust foundation for enterprise-scale automation.
