Claude Code Rewrites Game-Clone Rule
Claude Code 2.1.317 now lets developers name an existing game as shorthand for its genre or mechanics while still refusing to recreate that specific title. The prompt-level policy change is absent from Anthropic’s public release notes.
Anthropic’s distinction is sensible in principle, but the fuzzy, model-enforced boundary remains difficult to audit and predict.
- –Named references should now guide genre-level inspiration, not trigger blanket refusals.
- –Renaming a faithful copy still does not bypass the restriction.
- –Independent testing found inconsistent behavior across similar prompts, highlighting the limits of prompt-based IP enforcement.
- –Ports, mods, licensed projects, and user-owned games remain unclear under the rule.
- –Shipping a meaningful behavior change without documenting it in release notes weakens developer trust.
