GitHub Copilot Fusion Orchestrates Models
GitHub Copilot Fusion is now generally available, automatically routing coding tasks across models and orchestrating drafts, critiques, and revisions. Developers choose Standard, High, or Max effort across VS Code, Copilot CLI, the Copilot app, and JetBrains IDEs.
Fusion makes model selection an infrastructure problem GitHub handles behind the scenes, potentially making agentic coding more efficient and less intimidating.
- –Uses single-model, cascade, and critique workflows depending on task complexity
- –Fusion Max reportedly approaches Claude Code Opus 5.5 performance at roughly half the per-task cost
- –High and Max can consume more credits because multiple models may run on one task
- –Local-model routing adds a promising cost and privacy lever, though it remains experimental and cloud-dependent
- –The bigger strategic move is turning Copilot from a model picker into a model-orchestration layer
