REA drops AI reverse-engineering toolkit
REA is an MIT-licensed MCP server and CLI that lets coding agents inspect native binaries, Electron apps, .NET assemblies, Android packages, firmware, and websites without source code. It connects agents such as Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, and Gemini CLI to tools including Ghidra, Hopper, and IDA.
REA makes reverse engineering dramatically more accessible, but its real breakthrough is evidence-driven agent workflows—not magically recovering original source code.
- –Runs analysis locally and returns pseudocode, behavior, evidence, and limitations
- –Gives AI agents a structured bridge into professional reverse-engineering tools
- –Could accelerate interoperability, software preservation, security research, and legacy modernization
- –Decompiled output still requires expert validation and rarely reproduces proprietary implementations exactly
- –Users must analyze only software they own or are authorized to inspect, with model-provider policy and IP risks still unresolved
