Discord Ditches Electron for Leaner Rust Client
Discord is rebuilding its desktop client in Rust with the GPUI framework, replacing Electron and sharing core code with native mobile apps. An early Windows build reportedly used about 290MB of RAM, but broader performance testing has yet to happen.
This is a meaningful architectural reset for a notoriously heavy desktop app, though one early memory snapshot is not proof of a sustained 90% reduction.
- –Desktop drops Electron; mobile drops React Native while retaining native UI
- –GPUI provides GPU-accelerated rendering without bundling Chromium
- –Lower idle memory could benefit gamers, laptops, and machines with limited RAM
- –Bot developers and client mod users may face compatibility changes as rendering moves native
- –Discord says the interface should look and work identically, with user testing expected soon
