Dutch government soft-launches code.overheid.nl Forgejo platform
code.overheid.nl is a new government-wide Git platform for publishing and developing open-source software, launched as a pilot by the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations with support from developer.overheid.nl, DAWO (SSC-ICT), and Opensourcewerken. Built on Forgejo and fully self-hosted, it is positioned as a sovereign alternative to GitHub and GitLab, with access still limited while the team grows the platform with developers and participating organizations.
// ANALYSIS
This is less a polished product launch than an intentional public build-in-progress, and that makes it more interesting than a standard government IT announcement.
- –The key angle is digital sovereignty: the platform is self-hosted and explicitly meant to reduce dependence on US-based code hosting.
- –Forgejo is a sensible choice for this use case because it is open source, familiar to Git users, and easier to align with public-sector hosting requirements.
- –The pilot framing matters: this is not yet a full replacement for GitHub across all Dutch government bodies.
- –The invitation to contribute via issues and PRs signals that the platform is being shaped with its users, not just deployed to them.
