Google tightens Gemini model access
Starting October 9, personal Gemini accounts without a Google AI subscription will be limited to Flash-Lite, while AI Plus subscribers retain Flash-Lite and Flash but lose Pro on dates communicated by email. AI Pro and Ultra keep all three models and gain Deep Think access.
Google is turning Gemini’s model ladder into a clearer paywall, making the free app less useful for serious work while strengthening the Pro upsell.
- –Free users lose Flash and Pro; AI Plus users lose Pro.
- –New low, medium, and high effort controls make quality-versus-usage tradeoffs explicit.
- –Deep Think access makes AI Pro more attractive, but further weakens the value proposition of AI Plus.
- –Developers using the consumer app for coding or prototyping should expect less capable free-tier assistance; this notice applies to personal Gemini Apps accounts, not necessarily API access.
- –The shift signals that Google is prioritizing compute economics over broad frontier-model access.
