MCP TypeScript SDK adds built-in OpenTelemetry
The official MCP TypeScript SDK merged built-in OpenTelemetry tracing and duration metrics for clients and servers, targeting the next version bump. Trace context propagates through params._meta, while tool arguments and results stay out of spans by default.
This is an important observability upgrade for MCP systems, turning cross-process tracing into a default SDK capability while keeping instrumentation relatively low-friction.
- –Client, Server, and McpServer emit spans and duration metrics once an OpenTelemetry SDK is registered.
- –W3C trace context can connect client and server spans across stdio and Streamable HTTP transports.
- –Low-cardinality metrics and omitted tool payloads reduce performance and data-exposure risks.
- –Existing Sentry or custom instrumentation can disable SDK telemetry with openTelemetry: false.
- –MCP semantic conventions remain experimental, so span and attribute names may change in minor releases.
