EAC launches regional AI fund, eyes sovereignty
The East African Community has established a Regional AI Technologies Fund to transition member states from digital consumers to global AI competitors. By prioritizing Kiswahili-trained models and local infrastructure, the bloc aims to secure digital sovereignty and unlock a projected $1 trillion in regional GDP.
This is a strategic play for technological independence that shifts East Africa from a passive consumer to a primary architect of its digital future. The focus on Kiswahili-trained models and local hosting creates a regional moat against Silicon Valley-centric AI dominance, while a blended finance approach addresses the commercial 'valley of death' for African research. Coordinated governance through the EAC AI Alliance aims to prevent regional fragmentation during the critical 2025–2027 window to capitalize on the region's $1 trillion economic potential.
