Claude Code adds guardrail against game clones
Anthropic added two server-side prompt sentences to Claude Code on Opus 5.5, steering it away from recreating specific existing video games—even when renamed or labeled original. Original games, genre experiments, and projects using users’ own designs and assets remain supported.
This is a sensible IP guardrail, but it exposes the difficulty of enforcing copyright boundaries through model behavior alone.
- –The rule cannot reliably distinguish infringing clones from authorized ports, fan projects, or interoperability work.
- –Server-side guidance can change Claude Code’s behavior without a local CLI release, complicating reproducibility.
- –Developers may need clearer provenance for designs, assets, and references to avoid false refusals.
- –The policy tests whether providers can curb AI-assisted cloning without pushing determined users toward less-restricted tools.
