Living Mycelium Dress Self-Repairs and Renews
Researchers at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT), in collaboration with material innovation firm Peelsphere, have developed an engineered living material textile powered by dormant fungal mycelium (Cordyceps militaris). Unlike standard mushroom leathers that are heat-inactivated and inert, this material retains viable fungal cells, allowing the fabric to dynamically heal damage and accept modular biological add-ons for custom colors and enhanced material properties.
Living bio-textiles represent a radical shift from static consumer goods to dynamic, self-maintaining materials.
- –Preserves viable fungal cells in a dormant state to enable dynamic self-repair when triggered.
- –Operates as a customizable biological platform where extra fungi or yeast strains can be added for UV protection or color.
- –Offers a viable path toward truly sustainable, circular fashion that replaces synthetic polymers with living biology.
