Liquid AI drops LFM3 open-weight model family
Liquid AI released LFM3, a family of roughly 2B open-weight models spanning text, vision, audio, omni, and decision tasks on a shared backbone. The 1.7B text model targets local agents with a 256K-token context window and about 1GB memory usage at 4-bit precision.
LFM3 makes a compelling case that small, specialized models can be more useful than oversized generalists when they run locally and fit directly into agent workflows.
- –LFM3-1.7B is purpose-trained for Hermes Agent, Pi, and OpenClaw rather than merely adapted after pretraining
- –A 256K context window gives local agents room for large codebases, tool traces, and persistent workflows
- –The shared backbone across modalities could simplify deployment and fine-tuning for developers building multimodal applications
- –Roughly 1GB at 4-bit precision makes practical phone, laptop, and edge deployment plausible
- –The real test will be sustained tool use and reliability, not headline benchmark scores
