Claude Opus 4.6 gets fast mode
Anthropic added fast mode to Claude Code for Claude Opus 4.6, giving developers a higher-speed, higher-cost configuration they can toggle with `/fast` for lower-latency coding sessions. The video stress-tests that tradeoff with a startup-style sprint to generate and deploy a SaaS MVP under time pressure.
This is a useful product tweak, not a new model release: Anthropic is letting developers buy back latency without changing the underlying Opus 4.6 quality. For coding workflows, that matters because interactive speed often determines whether AI feels like a teammate or a bottleneck.
- –Anthropic says fast mode delivers roughly 2.5x faster responses while using the same Opus 4.6 model and capabilities
- –The tradeoff is price: fast mode bills through extra usage at a premium rate rather than counting against included subscription usage
- –Anthropic positions it for rapid iteration, live debugging, and deadline-driven sessions, not cost-sensitive batch work or long autonomous runs
- –Separate rate limits with automatic fallback to standard Opus 4.6 make this feel like a performance tier inside Claude Code rather than a distinct product
