Midjourney unveils radiation-free Ultrasonic CT Scanner
Midjourney has announced the Midjourney Scanner, a radiation-free full-body ultrasonic CT imaging device built in partnership with Butterfly Network that performs complete scans in 60 seconds. The company plans to deploy 50,000 scanners over six years, starting with a flagship San Francisco location by 2027.
Midjourney's transition from software-based generative AI to highly regulated medical hardware is an incredibly ambitious leap, but the physics of whole-body ultrasound tomography and the regulatory hurdles of clinical deployment make their hyper-aggressive timeline highly suspect.
* Partnering with Butterfly Network gives the hardware project foundational credibility, but scaling the ultrasound-on-chip design to a 40-module tomographic ring requires solving complex acoustic and computational challenges.
* The "spa" branding suggests Midjourney may attempt to market this as a consumer wellness screening tool to sidestep FDA diagnostic clearances, akin to other recent direct-to-consumer MRI startups.
* The target of 50,000 deployed units and 1 billion scans monthly is astronomically high for any new medical device category, especially one that hasn't published independent clinical validation.
