Epic Games launches Lore version control
Epic Games has announced Lore, an open-source version control system designed to handle the large binary assets and massive data demands of game development. Positioned as an alternative to Perforce, the system supports high-speed transfers, conflict prevention through file locking, and integration into Unreal Editor for Fortnite.
While Git dominates standard software engineering, game development has desperately needed a modern, open-source alternative to Perforce's expensive monopoly, and Lore has the backing to make that happen.
* Git LFS has always felt like a clunky band-aid for binary files, so a built-from-scratch binary-first VCS is a major win for the industry.
* Open sourcing Lore lowers the cost barrier for indie studios while fostering an ecosystem of developer and artist tools.
* The success of Lore will depend on the speed at which user-friendly GUI clients are developed, as artists cannot be expected to use command-line version control.
