Apple iMac gets M6, local AI boost
Apple unveiled a refreshed 24-inch iMac with the M6 chip, up to 12-core CPU/GPU, Wi-Fi 7, macOS 27, and seven colors. Preorders begin October 28 at $1,499, with availability starting November 6; Apple claims up to 5x faster on-device AI performance than M4.
This is a silicon refresh rather than a redesign, but it makes the iMac a more capable turnkey machine for local AI and creative workflows.
- –M6 adds Neural Accelerators, a dual 16-core Neural Engine, and up to 170GB/s memory bandwidth for local model inference. [Apple specifications](https://www.apple.com/imac/specs/)
- –Apple claims up to 5x faster on-device AI performance than M4 in LM Studio, though independent benchmarks are still needed.
- –The base configuration remains limited to 16GB memory and 256GB storage, which may constrain serious local-LLM workloads.
- –Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, faster storage, and up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports modernize connectivity without changing the desktop’s core design.
- –For developers, the appeal is a quiet all-in-one workstation for Apple Intelligence, Claude, LM Studio, and vibe coding—not a replacement for higher-memory Mac Studio systems.
