NuGet Packages Gain Just-in-Time Agent Skills
Microsoft is experimenting with bundling version-matched SKILL.md files inside NuGet packages, giving AI coding agents current guidance alongside updated binaries. Tools such as dotnet-inspect and dotnet-package-skills expose or copy those skills into projects.
This is a smart packaging move: it turns dependency versioning into context versioning, helping agents keep pace with fast-changing and poorly documented .NET APIs. The catch is that maintainers are now shipping influence over agent behavior, making evaluation, token cost, and package trust part of dependency hygiene.
- –`SKILL.md` files travel with the exact package version, reducing stale model knowledge and long-tail API hallucinations.
- –`dotnet-inspect` can discover skills in a package graph, while `dotnet-package-skills` can copy them into a repository’s `.agents/skills` directory.
- –Microsoft’s experiments suggest skill quality must be evaluated across model tiers; poorly designed instructions can increase cost or reduce effectiveness.
- –Agent-readable package content creates a new supply-chain threat vector, so teams should apply the same trust and review standards used for dependencies.
- –This is an emerging delivery pattern rather than a fully integrated NuGet feature; Microsoft says guidance on using package-delivered skills with agents is still forthcoming.
