OpenAI widens Codex beyond coding

This is OpenAI trying to turn Codex into a developer operating layer, not just an AI pair programmer.

• –Background computer use and the in-app browser move Codex from “write code” toward “do the task” across apps and web workflows.
• –Memory plus automations make the product feel more persistent, which matters if OpenAI wants Codex to handle repeatable, long-running work instead of one-off prompts.
• –The new plugin expansion is the biggest strategic signal: OpenAI wants Codex to pull context from Slack, Notion, Jira, GitLab, Google Docs, and other systems developers already live in.
• –PR review, multi-terminal, SSH devbox support, and richer file previews make the app more credible as a real workbench, not a demo shell.
• –The rollout is still staged, with some features macOS-first and Enterprise/Edu/EU-UK support coming later, so this is a platform shift with uneven availability.
