SperidLabs Idol turns images into 3D
SperidLabs released Idol, an Apache-2.0 model that converts a single image into a 3D Gaussian splat with up to 1,048,576 Gaussians. The pipeline reportedly peaks at 7.2 GB of VRAM and exports standard `.ply` files.
Idol makes single-image 3D generation substantially more accessible, but its unseen geometry remains generative rather than faithfully reconstructed.
- –Consumer-GPU memory requirements make local experimentation and ComfyUI integration plausible.
- –Adjustable Gaussian counts offer a practical quality-versus-size tradeoff for interactive assets.
- –Standard `.ply` output fits existing Gaussian-splat viewers and creative workflows.
- –Apache 2.0 enables commercial use, though gated DINOv3 and FLUX.2 dependencies complicate the “fully open” claim.
- –Comparisons with TripoSplat, TRELLIS, and LGM are promising but currently rely on SperidLabs’ own benchmarks.
