Developer turns $20 hotspot into texting device
Developer bkovac documented a hardware build that repurposes an ultra-cheap ($20) MF800 4G wireless hotspot running OpenStick Linux into a distraction-free texting cyberdeck. Inspired by devices like the Beepy and Playdate, the build combines the cut-down PCB of the cellular modem, an Adafruit SHARP Memory Display, and a trimmed Clicks iPhone keyboard case functioning over standard USB HID. To make the components work together inside the compact enclosure, the author designed an open-source intermediate adapter PCB that manages 5V power boosting, level shifting, and USB host mode negotiation.
Repurposing disposable cellular hotspot hardware with embedded Linux creates an astonishingly cheap alternative to expensive single-board computers for custom mobile cyberdecks, even if it requires literally cutting a PCB in half.
